We all know that a decline in cognitive ability is a natural consequence of getting older. However new studies have indicated this begins to occur in the early to mid-40s. The research suggests that this is actually a sign of the times. In other words, cognitive function is diminishing sooner in the life span rather than lasting longer. We’re going in the wrong direction. To understand why this is happening we need to understand how the brain stores and retrieves information.

Basically, the brain relies on the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an essential role in forming neural connections. Unfortunately, as we age, acetylcholine decreases, limiting the brain’s ability to create new short-term memories. This is why you might be able to recall people or events from decades ago, but struggle to remember the name of the couple that moved in next door a year ago.

But the question is why does it seem to be worse now? Speculation suggests lifestyle, too much drinking, too much or too little exercise. The other issue and the one I believe to be most important is pesticides like glyphosate. Regarding the latter, beginning in 1986 Monsantose started spraying crops with glyphosate not coincidentally that is when US health started going downhill and it just keeps going.

The food news is that although we cannot stop aging, we can stop some aspects of the aging process and reverse others. When it comes to lifestyle organic is at the top of the list. But I know from personal experience that a healthy lifestyle is not enough. Because I have lived a healthy lifestyle for many years. And although that definitely makes a huge difference. I was not happy with the manner in which I was aging cognitively. I have discovered some extraordinarily helpful supplements that are life-changing that I want to share with you.

  1. Alpha GPC

Alpha-glycerophosphocholine (alpha-GPC or α-GPC) is a cholinergic compound that is used for cognitive-enhancement, and to increase power output in athletes. It appears to also support cellular membranes and may help prevent cognitive decline. Alpha-GPC is most often used for brain health.

  2. Huperzine A

Huperzine A has been shown to increase bioavailable levels of acetylcholine by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks it down, acetylcholinesterase. This fosters an ideal environment to form new neural connections and improve memory retention. Note that while huperzine A is extracted from huperzia serrata, they are not the same ingredient. Look for supplements that specifically contain huperzine A.

  3. Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Used for thousands of years by Buddhist monks to increase focus during meditation, lion’s mane mushroom helps improve cognition by enhancing the activity of choline acetyltransferase, which is responsible for the synthesis of acetylcholine in the body. This brain-boosting mushroom also helps promote the production of nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining and regenerating neurons.

  4. Bacopa Monnieri

Bacopa monnieri is an herb commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for its positive influence on memory and focus. Studies indicate the bacoside compounds contained in this potent plant cross the blood-brain barrier and, like huperzine A, help boost levels of acetylcholine by limiting its breakdown by acetylcholinesterase. In this way, bacopa monnieri helps generate new neural pathways.

  5. Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba, one of the world’s oldest tree species, has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine for its neuroprotective effects. Its root bark and leaves are rich in ginkgolide compounds, which help promote higher concentrations of acetylcholine in key regions of the brain responsible for decision-making and short-term memory recall. They are also beneficial for cerebral blood circulation.

  6. N-Acetyl Cysteine

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a supplement form of cysteine, a conditionally essential amino acid. NAC has many health benefits, including replenishing antioxidants and nourishing the brain. Cysteine is found in most high-protein foods, such as chicken, turkey, yogurt, cheese, eggs, sunflower seeds, and legumes. Consuming adequate cysteine and NAC is important for various health reasons, including replenishing the most potent antioxidant in your body, glutathione. These amino acids also help with chronic respiratory conditions, fertility, and brain health.

  7. ME-3

Lactobacillus fermentum ME-3 (often referred to as ME-3) is a strain of probiotic bacteria that has been found to produce glutathione. Glutathione has been recognized for decades as the Master Antioxidant and as an important regulator of detoxification. However, when taken orally, glutathione is only minimally effective due to degradation during the processes. ME3 is revolutionizing glutathione therapy as results from human clinical trials reveal that daily supplementation with ME-3 substantially increases plasma glutathione levels.
