Foods That Fight Inflammation

Finally, there are a number of “foods” for fighting inflammation that work as well or better than supplements. Inflammation refers to anything ending “its”. Phlebitis, arthritis, otitis media, etc.

Anti-Inflammatory Spices

One easy way to incorporate anti-inflammatories into your diet is through the use of anti-inflammatory spices i.e. you can “supplement” with them.

  • Curcumin

Curcumin is a component of the spice turmeric that provides several impressive health benefits. It can decrease inflammation in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer, to name a few.

  • Ginger

Ginger is a spice used in many cuisines that can be bought in powdered form or as a fresh root in most supermarkets. It has been used in traditional medicine for upset stomach, headache, and infection. It has been recognized as a potent anti-inflammatory for centuries.

  • Cinnamon

Cinnamon is not only great for your pumpkin pies, it has anti-inflammatory properties, which can also ease swelling. I put a teaspoon or more in my coffee every morning. Delicious!

  • Cayenne

Both cayenne and other hot chili peppers contain natural compounds called capsaicinoids which are what give cayenne its anti-inflammatory properties. So spice it up.

  • Garlic

The anti-inflammatory properties of garlic have long been recognized when it comes to relieving the inflammation of arthritis. You can and should use fresh garlic in almost every savory dish. Or you can roast it for a milder flavor.

  • Black Pepper

Black pepper, though not as hot as cayenne, has also been identified for its anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that the chemical compounds of black pepper, particularly piperine, may be effective in the early acute inflammatory process. It is also added to a number of other supplements because it helps them to absorb better.

  • Clove

Cloves, which have been used as an expectorant, and to treat stomach upset and nausea, are also considered an anti-inflammatory of the mouth and throat.

  • Coconut Oil

We don’t usually think of it this way but Coconut oil also fights inflammation, this time in the brain. In fact, as mentioned previously, it is the only thing that’s ever been shown to prevent and reverse Alzheimer’s (which is now viewed as an infection or inflammation in the brain.) It is so effective, that unless you overuse it, it does not contribute to vascular disease.

The really great thing about coconut oil is that it does not store fat in the body as it goes straight to the liver and is used as pure energy! Think about that: you can cook with this delicious oil and not gain weight from it, ever.

A recent discovery when it comes to brain health is MCT oil which is a form of coconut oil. It does not raise cholesterol. But what it does do is protect the brain the same way that the coconut oil does and perhaps even better. Make sure that it is organic and that it only has Caprylic acid.
